Artist Profile
Yvonne Elston
Yvonne’s handmade sculptural ceramics explore the beauty of the curve through the form of a bird. Her starting point is the cup of the palm. She aims to create work that is tactile and brings a sense of tranquillity into the home. Yvonne takes inspiration from Mid Century Design and its pared-down interpretation of the world around us.
Individually finished, Yvonne uses ancient glazing methods to give unique effects such as raku and smoke-firing. Using the 16th century Japanese Raku method, red-hot work is taken out of the kiln, thrust into a sawdust bin, producing a lustrous crackle. Smoke-firing dates back over 30 000 years – work is set alight amid layers of organic material – leaving delicate traces of a smouldering fire. She also makes her own glazes to fire in her electric kiln.
Yvonne has been making ceramics since she fell in love with clay in her teens. She was lucky enough to use studio facilities at Prema Arts Centre in Gloucestershire. A life-long passion, Yvonne has combined a successful career in Arts Marketing with her love of ceramics. Yvonne works from her studio in Bath, overlooking the garden. She is a Co-ordinator of the Bear Flat Artists Open Studios.
