Artist Profile
Vanessa Burley
My Shipwreck pots are made from toasted stoneware clay, blending wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques to create distinctly textured forms.
Using natural and beachcombed objects, I imprint textures into the clay, then encourage cracks and splits through a series of heat treatments. They are then finished with metallic glazes that flow and pool to echo the eroded and weathered surface of objects reclaimed from the sea.
The process is a harmonious blend of materials, techniques and an unpredictability, resulting in irregular forms, crystalline surfaces, crawling glazes, and lava-like finishes with striking visual depth and textures that evoke an irresistible urge touch.
