Artist Profile
Ruth Knight
As a ceramist, my work explores the balance between strength and fragility, as well as my connection to particular places, most strongly, the sea.
A large part of my work involves collecting items from the beach (seaweed, stones, shells etc.) and pressing them into my thrown forms. This process often pushes the clay to the point of collapse, but I love how organic and individual each piece comes out, like the clay alone has decided what form it wants to take.
Texture also features heavily in my work. As well as imprinting textures directly into the clay, I enjoy using textured glazes that replicate natural surfaces like stone and lichen.
