Artist Profile
Raymond Wirick
I, like many before me, am fascinated by human and animal forms, and am unashamed to admit my particular passion for the human feminine shape. I express the joy of her curves with the stroke of my saws and chisels and relish in the life and movement that expresses. This is all treated with the reverence it deserves. I have lived in the Cotswolds for 20 years and have also fallen in love with the wild animals I see around me.
With my chainsaw carving, I have built on years of classical drawing practice and academic study resulting in remarkably painterly, 3D sketches in wood. The fluidity, expression and even looseness of my drawing style translates surprisingly to the typically unschooled and often literal medium of chainsaw carving, elevating it from a rural craft to fine art. I have worked for years outdoors in gardens and parks and have recently scaled down and refined my work for the gallery and indoor home space, consequently bringing an element of the great outdoors, inside.
I sculpt primarily from memory, in collaboration with the organic nature of the logs I choose; without a fixed plan, the figure emerges. As I move and turn the log my perspective refreshes from moment to moment and the truth of the form is found. Each cut dictates the next. It is a magical, visceral, physical experience with a heavy, loud, chainsaw all in service of the creative process. I am never more in the moment than when I am carving; I am present, I consider, I commit.
