Artist Profile
Mark Somerville
Mark sells pieces from the two distinct sides of his artistic practice.
Firstly, a range of abstract imagery anchored in landscape. They are largely derived from photographs taken on trips to Southern Europe. The simplicity and geometry of the architecture combined with the quality of the light and colours lend themselves to abstract art.
Digital images evolve as they are worked up. They are deconstructed and then reassembled into their final composition, transcending the original inspiration so that the viewer can give range to their own imagination and interpretation on the piece. These compositions are reproduced on heavyweight archival paper and for sale in a limited range of sizes.
As a counterpoint to his digital work, Mark retains his relationship with traditional photography. He produces Cyanotypes using one of the oldest processes in photographic history. High quality watercolour paper is hand coated with a light-sensitive emulsion made from iron compounds. A negative version of an image is placed in contact with the emulsion and then exposed to ultraviolet light for several minutes.
The result is an amazing Royal blue image with absolutely no ink involved. The final piece will have an (often unpredictable) tonal range from Prussian blue to Turquoise. Mark then adds secondary tones using organic materials, such as natural vegetable dyes from the garden, to compliment the blues. The process combines traditional photographic skills with eco-friendly modern techniques. The beauty of Cyanotypes is that each print is handmade and therefore unique.
Alongside a successful career in Commercial photography, Mark has exhibited and sold his photographic compositions in numerous galleries and Open shows throughout the Southwest of England.
