Medium: Painting, Watercolour

After studying Graphics and Visual Communication at Bath Academy of Art, I followed a career in illustration working for many of the UK’s Children’s Book Publishers. I also worked for magazines such as Future Publishing’s ‘Cross Stitcher’, and for Galt Toys for whom I illustrated jigsaw puzzles, books, and games. I had also spent 18 months working as an architectural illustrator.

I developed my ‘Kate’ paintings slowly to start off with, (when I wasn’t working on commissioned projects) using Colerne village, where I live, as the scene in which to set little mousey characters going about their daily lives. I ventured further afield to Castle Combe, and then boldly took on the Georgian City of Bath. I introduced rabbity characters and decided to call them The Bath Bunns – they have had many adventures in our fair city, masquerading as Romans, Jane Austen’s Mr Darcy and Miss Bunnett ( Pride and Carrot Juice), popping in to Sally Lunns for a Bath Bun!, and so-on. They have since been joined by many other animals of the British countryside and farmyard, exploring Bath, Corsham, Castle Combe, Colerne,  Bradford on Avon, and even London …. so far..

I paint in watercolour, with a little brown pencil for outline and detail. I work from my own photographs using these as the background which I try to paint as realistically as I can. I incorporate furry characters in the scene – sometimes it might be an illustration of a well known nursery rhyme, sometimes a bit of whimsical nonsense I dreamed up myself, and sometimes it’s just the characters going about their day with no more narrative than that.

I live near Bath in the village of Colerne. I enjoy walks in the surrounding countryside, and this has been the inspiration of my other line in watercolours – cows ( cattle).

I also play guitar and sing a bit,  and I enjoy gardening, sewing, knitting, collecting bric a brac, and going to the pub and dancing to a good band.

I have a regular pitch at Walcot Street Antique and Flea Market on a Saturday where I have prints, cards, tea towels, jigsaws and so-on for sale. Colerne Post office has a good supply of my cards!
