Medium: Oil Painting

I am an oil painter inspired by the power of the ocean and love to bring the same energy into my seascape and wave paintings. Living in the coastal town of Teignmouth, Devon I can walk to the sea and view it’s ever changing colours and moods. Visits to Cornwall also inspire my work, especially Perranporth, Constantine Bay.

Studying film and video art as part of my BA Fine Art course at Plymouth University has influenced my painting style. I like to bring a sense of movement and escapism in my work. For example I want the viewer to feel they can walk across the sand or dive into the sea when looking at my paintings.

Oil on canvas is my preferred medium due to it’s adaptability. It is so versatile allowing you to add thick impasto layers or more fluid translucent ones. As a result this medium is very useful when you want to capture ocean waves in all their forms and variety of colours. Also it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too for added texture. I apply glazes to enrich the surface and revisit my paintings multiple times until satisfied with the texture and depth of colour.

Watergate Bay Ocean Waves
Watergate Bay Ocean Waves is an original oil on canvas painting measuring 122 x 61 cm. Framed in a white washed wooden frame and ready to hang. Comes with a certificate of authenticity and a collector guarantee. This painting is inspired by the beautiful beach at Watergate Bay. This vast stretch of sand, big Atlantic swells, and high sea-beaten cliffs; a dramatic landscape, it’s one of the county’s wildest coastlines and considered by many as one of Cornwall’s best beaches. Watergate Bay beach is around 3 miles from Newquay on the North Cornwall coast, stretching out for two miles of golden sand, imposing cliffs, and untamed sea. Spectators, surfers, and world-class kite surfers flock here for the enormous waves providing a spectacular sight on any day. Privately owned, the beach is dog-friendly year-round and if the sea-breeze gets too fresh, there are cafes and restaurants close by to shelter and warm up in.
