Artist Profile
Tim Aston
My work explores Ireland’s harbours as places of pause, work, shelter, and transition, spaces shaped as much by weather, tide, and time as by human presence. These small coastal and inland harbours are often overlooked, yet they hold deep emotional and cultural resonance, acting as thresholds between land and sea, movement and stillness.
Working in linocut, I create graphic compositions that aim to capture the character and atmosphere of each place rather than literal detail. The process is deliberately slow and physical: drawing on location and from memory, cutting by hand, and printing in limited editions. Each print is produced in restrained colourways, most often Prussian Blue and soft Sea Grey, reflecting the tonal qualities of the Irish shoreline.
The Harbour Collection is a collaboration between myself and fellow artist Greg Morahan, combining shared observation, discussion, and refinement of each image. This collaborative process helps distil each harbour to its essential forms and rhythms, balancing precision with emotional depth.
My practice is rooted in craft, storytelling, and a strong sense of place. The resulting works are intended to feel both contemporary and timeless, graphic in form, and quietly evocative, inviting viewers to linger and recognise something familiar, even if they have never stood on that particular shore.
