Collage on board (wood blocks, original text and images from The Observer’s Guide to Wildflowers, ink, and acrylic paint)
This piece was inspired by the colour complementaries of violet and
yellow. It is a striking combination and is often found as the flowers
for a variety of plants, including irises, wild pansy, types of asters,
crocuses, and some species of the nightshade family. It’s also an
effective combination for attracting bees.
The collaged elements include the poem The Flower That Smiles Today by Percy Bysshe Shelley, and extracts from The Observers Guide to Wildflowers. The Flower That Smiles Today
is a wonderful poem that speaks to the transience of life and all the
joys within it. I’m a fan of Shelley’s romantic poetry and The Flower That Smiles Today is one of my favourites. The Observers Guides were books that I grew up with and have a special significance for me in this piece. My Dad had a collection of Observers Guides and we would often use them to identify plants, birds, and trees on walks.
