Collage on board (painted wood blocks, comic fragments, text from Le Morte D’arthur, ink, and acrylic paint)
This piece features images of the character, Enchantress, taken from
reprinted editions of early Avengers stories. Enchantress, although
depicted as Asgardian in Marvel comics has no direct link to Norse
mythology and is more an amalgam of various characters, unlike her
counterpart, Thor.
Like many women portrayed in literature, Enchantress embodies many of
the typical stereotypes associated with powerful female characters; she
is enchanting, mischievous, manipulative, and seductive. Versions of
this type of characterisation appear in Beowulf (Grendel’s Mother) and
in the Arthurian character, Morgan Le Faye. It is Morgan Le Faye from
whom I took the inspiration for the text.
